With
the technique of soufflé, King can create a complex garment
that is either seamless or has a minimum of seams.
He
does this by incorporating a variety of classic fabric manipulation
techniques in such a way that the techniques create the shape of
the garment. The resulting complex constructions required new approaches
to pattern drafting, based not on geometry but on algebra. These
techniques create a stylistic unity to the designs; the permutations
and varied effects permitted are endless.
The
new fabric technology is what enables King to create these pieces.
Man-made fibers are stronger, resist crushing, and are easy
to care for—this makes the pieces easy to travel with, and easy
to enjoy.
Another
advantage is, that the pieces, though light and airy, are warm
to wear, beautifully providing the main function of an evening
wrap or coat.
